The Science of Overtraining

The mechanisms underlying OTS involve dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, alterations in sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system balance, suppression of immune function, and changes in mood and motivation mediated by central neurotransmitter systems. These changes produce a characteristic signature across multiple monitoring parameters — a signature that, when viewed in isolation, may appear ambiguous, but when integrated across variables and viewed longitudinally, is highly diagnostic. Key scientific work on OTS diagnosis and prevention has been published through the European College of Sport Science and in consensus statements published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, which provide the evidence base for svexa’s monitoring protocols.

Svexa continues to build on existing evidence with proprietary R&D. For example – in their new publication A Simple Model for Diagnosis of Maladaptations to Exercise Training, Svexa CSO Filip Larsen and PhD student Lina Nilsson with colleagues have constructed a new model designed to optimize the training load of athletes and avoid overtraining.

What Svexa Monitors

The Overtraining Detection module continuously tracks a multi-parameter panel of markers associated with OTS development:

  •   Heart rate variability trends — declining HRV over 2–3 weeks is among the earliest objective signs of accumulating physiological stress
  •   Resting heart rate elevation — a sustained increase above individual baseline often precedes full OTS
  •   Sleep quality deterioration — disrupted sleep architecture is both a cause and consequence of OTS development
  •   Subjective wellness trajectory — progressive decline in perceived energy, motivation, and mood assessed via validated questionnaire tools
  •   Training response decrement — performance failing to improve or declining despite continued training load
  •   Acute:chronic workload ratio — sustained period of high acute-to-chronic ratio is a primary load-based risk factor

Alert System and Intervention Guidance

When the integrated monitoring system detects a pattern consistent with developing overreaching or OTS risk, coaches and practitioners receive a structured alert with the supporting data and a recommended intervention protocol. Interventions are graduated from mild load reduction (for early overreaching) to complete rest with medical review (for suspected OTS) — enabling proportionate responses rather than reflexive rest prescriptions that unnecessarily disrupt training.

Key Benefits

  •   Continuous multi-parameter monitoring providing early OTS warning
  •   Integrated alert system with intervention guidance
  •   Longitudinal pattern analysis identifying individual vulnerability factors
  •   Differentiation between functional overreaching (normal training adaptation) and non-functional overreaching
  •   Evidence-based return-to-training protocols following OTS episodes
